During one of the most anticipated weekends in Black culture, Founder Trell Thomas welcomed more than 250 influential leaders, entertainers, entrepreneurs, beauty executives, and changemakers to the annual “Black Excellence Brunch”, presented in partnership with NYX Professional Makeup, during ESSENCE Festival weekend. Held at River City Venue at Port of New Orleans Place, the exclusive all-white affair celebrated the power of Black excellence while honoring those whose impact continues to shape entertainment, business, beauty, and culture.

The afternoon’s highest honor was presented to the legendary Patti LaBelle, whose extraordinary career has inspired generations through music, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and unwavering authenticity. For decades, LaBelle has represented grace, resilience, and timeless excellence qualities that continue to influence artists and beauty enthusiasts around the world.
One of the event’s most unforgettable moments came when Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Marsha Ambrosius delivered an intimate musical tribute that captivated everyone in attendance. Ambrosius surprised the audience with a heartfelt rendition of Patti LaBelle’s signature classic, “If Only You Knew,” performed directly to the music icon herself. The emotional exchange between the two powerhouse vocalists quickly became one of the defining moments of ESSENCE Festival weekend, earning a standing ovation from guests throughout the ballroom.

The celebration welcomed an impressive collection of cultural leaders and tastemakers, including MC Lyte, Dawn Richard, Jasmine Crockett, Lynae Vanee, Melinda Williams, Jotaka Eaddy, Brandon Claybon, Colby Nixon, Diarra Kilpatrick, and Raven Goodwin, alongside executives, creators, entrepreneurs, and influential voices from across the country. Guests were also welcomed by the unmistakable sounds of a traditional New Orleans second line band, bringing local culture and celebration into an already unforgettable afternoon.
As a publication dedicated to celebrating Black beauty for 35 years, Hype Hair appreciated how the partnership with NYX Professional Makeup elevated the conversation around beauty beyond products alone. Throughout the experience, guests witnessed how artistry, authenticity, and representation continue to define today’s beauty landscape. The collaboration reflected NYX Professional Makeup’s commitment to empowering diverse voices while encouraging fearless self-expression through beauty and creativity.

“Black Excellence Brunch has always been about creating intentional spaces where our stories, achievements, and legacy are celebrated,” said Founder Trell Thomas. “To honor a living legend like Patti LaBelle while partnering with NYX Professional Makeup to champion beauty, authenticity, and representation made this year’s gathering incredibly meaningful.”

That mission resonated throughout every detail of the brunch from elevated hospitality and inspiring conversations to authentic networking opportunities among some of the nation’s most influential leaders. More than an annual event, Black Excellence Brunch has evolved into a cultural institution that intentionally celebrates those who continue to uplift and advance the Black community across every industry.
