What Shiatsu Really Means In A Massage Chair?

Shiatsu is a common term you’ll hear in the massage chair industry. Many massage chairs include a Shiatsu program, but not everyone understands what it actually means.

In a massage chair, Shiatsu refers to a technique where the rollers move down the back, stop at specific points, apply sustained pressure, and then continue to the next location. The motion is deliberate and methodical.

The rollers travel down the spine, pause, press deeply into a targeted area, then move to the next point and repeat the process. This creates a focused acupressure-style massage designed to target specific muscle groups and pressure points.

Shiatsu is different from massage techniques such as kneading, tapping, or percussion. Those programs involve continuous movement and changing rhythms. Shiatsu, on the other hand, is slower, more controlled, and emphasizes sustained pressure at specific locations.

If you see a massage chair program labeled Shiatsu or Acupressure, this type of targeted pressure-point massage is usually what the program is designed to deliver.
