Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from Massage Chair Relief, and today we’re going to talk about the roller mechanisms in a massage chair.
The primary massaging device in a massage chair is the roller mechanism. Most modern chairs have a track that runs down your back and often underneath the seat as well. This is commonly called an SL-track.
The roller mechanism moves along this track—similar to a train car on rails. It travels up and down your back and, in many chairs, continues underneath the seat before returning back up again.
Some newer chairs feature what’s called a split-track design. This is essentially an SL-track that splits about one-third of the way from the bottom. In these designs, you may have two separate roller mechanisms operating at the same time—one working on the upper back and another on the lower back.
In the industry, these roller mechanisms are often referred to as “mechs.”
What the Rollers Actually Do
The roller mechanism contains roller balls, which are the parts that physically contact your back. As the mechanism moves along the track, these roller balls roll along your spine and muscles.
The rollers can move in several directions:
-
Up and down
-
Side to side
-
Forward and backward
These movements create different massage techniques such as:
When you feel a massage chair working on your back, what you’re actually feeling are those roller balls performing the massage movements.
Some chairs have two rollers, while others have four rollers. Certain chairs may even have multiple roller sets, such as four rollers for the upper back and four for the lower back. There are many different configurations, but they all perform the same basic function.
Airbags are another component of massage chairs, but today we’re focusing only on the rollers, which are the primary massage mechanism.
What Makes Rollers Feel Different
Not all rollers feel the same. The way they feel depends on a few key factors.
1. The Material of the Roller
The roller balls may be made from different materials, such as:
Rubber rollers tend to have a little bit of give, which can make the massage feel slightly softer and more forgiving.
Hard plastic rollers, on the other hand, are much more rigid. I often compare them to a bowling ball. They can feel stronger and more direct on the muscles.
2. The Size of the Roller Ball
Roller balls can also vary in size, which changes how they feel on your back.
-
Larger rollers create a broader contact area and often feel smoother and more comfortable.
-
Smaller rollers create a more concentrated point of pressure and may feel like they are digging deeper into the muscle.
For example:
Both types can be effective, but they provide very different massage sensations.
Roller Intensity and Adjustments
Most massage chairs allow you to adjust the intensity of the rollers.
Intensity typically refers to how far the rollers move forward into your back. Increasing the intensity allows the rollers to press deeper into the muscles. Reducing the intensity pulls them back so the massage becomes much gentler.
This means you can have:
-
Very strong, deep massage
-
Very light and gentle massage
Even with the same roller material and size, adjusting the intensity can dramatically change how the massage feels.
Why Trying a Chair Matters
This is why it’s important to sit in different massage chairs before buying one, if possible.
I remember a customer who came into our showroom years ago. When I asked her what kind of massage she preferred, she immediately said:
“I want the strongest chair you have.”
So we put her in the strongest chair in the showroom.
Within seconds she said:
“Oh my gosh, this is way too strong. I can’t handle this.”
We moved her to a slightly gentler chair. Still too strong.
We tried another one. Still too strong.
Eventually she ended up choosing the softest and most gentle chair we carried.
She came in expecting an intense massage and left with the most gentle chair in the showroom.
That experience reinforced something I’ve learned over the years: people really need to sit in a chair to know what feels right for them.
Depth of the Rollers
Another factor that affects the massage is how deeply the rollers can extend into your back.
Different chairs have different depth capabilities. Some rollers may extend only a small amount, while others can push significantly deeper into the muscles.
This also changes how intense the massage feels.
Adjusting Intensity with Padding
If a chair feels too intense, you can often reduce the intensity by adding padding, such as:
-
Back pads
-
Blankets
-
Pillows
However, the opposite is not true.
If a chair is too gentle, you usually cannot make it significantly stronger—even if it has advanced features like 3D or 4D roller adjustments.
That’s an important point to remember.
You can reduce intensity in a strong chair, but it’s difficult to increase intensity in a weak chair.
Every Chair Feels Different
Even chairs from the same manufacturer can feel very different.
In our showroom, we may have 20 different massage chairs, and each one feels different on your body.
Five people could sit in the same chair one after another and each person would describe the experience differently.
That’s because every person has:
So what feels amazing to one person may feel too strong—or too weak—to someone else.
Final Advice
When shopping for a massage chair, the roller experience is the most important factor in determining whether a chair is right for you.
Pay attention to:
-
How the rollers feel on your back
-
Whether the intensity is comfortable
-
Whether the chair fits your height and body shape
For example, I’m 6’4″, so I need to make sure the rollers reach all the way up to my neck and that the leg rest extends far enough.
If your knees are up near your chest like you’re sitting in a go-kart, that’s not a good fit.
Trying the chair beforehand can help you avoid:
And if you do buy a chair online without trying it first, make sure you understand the return policy, because returning massage chairs can be expensive.
