Primordial waters (the first signs of life on earth) a term taken from Jules Verne’s writing of ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea’ was the inspiration Founder Arnaud Poulain set in motion when inventing Les Eaux Primordiales. His dream was envisioned as a return to his roots close to Arras in northern France, a place where nature and industry intertwine. The design of the flacons was directly taken and shaped from the heritage he grew up with which combines both art and science. From the angular cube shaped cap to the lush curves of the body of the bottle, there is a duality of structure versus creative freedom to bring to life Arnaud Poulain’s olfactive dream.

Arnaud Poulain collaborated with his mentor Amelie Bourgeois to create the Superfluide Collection, which is centered around intense, warm and resinous notes. The name Superfluide encapsulates the sense of these fragrances beautifully. In the case of Les Eaux Primordiales Ambre Superfluide one can sense the flow of the perfume, there are no rough edges to my nose. The initial spritz is a lush blend of herbal, spicy and gourmand notes with a slightly metallic experience. This is why it is important to simply enjoy this perfume rather than unpick each element. I expected a dense, thick fragrance and that could not be further from the truth. There is a subtlety and airiness to it, whilst still harnessing the power of benzoin, tobacco and black vanilla.

To me the heart of the scent is where its magic lies. The combination of a light rose the fresh and bright balsam with cardamom is a stroke of genius. These notes function as a perfect bridge between the initial zesty crisp apple, sweet honey and cinnamon and the slightly boozy rum and deep amber base notes. As a result, there is so much happening at once one minute verdant the next sugary Les Eaux Primordiales Ambre Superfluide is a scent which wraps itself gently around the wearer and brings people closer to you. It is marketed as more of a winter scent, apple cinnamon pie and gingerbread wafting into one’s nose. The interweaving of tobacco and rum is a comforting aroma. It is much more versatile than that; with its brightness and floral tonality Ambre Superfluide could be worn all year round. Even in summer as it is airy not cloying.
Les Eaux Primordiales Ambre Superfluide is a polished perfume with great likeability. A staple for a collection, which acts as a wonderful transitional scent between seasons. Arnaud Poulain and Amelie Bourgeois of Flair Paris are a team to keep an eye on in the next year as I can see this fragrance house going from strength to strength.
