It’s pretty much fall! That means it’s time to dig out your deepest, darkest nail polish shades to signal to the world that you welcome the witchy autumnal ambience that’s settling around us. And if you’ve ever looked down at your classic burgundy nails and thought, Not moody enough, Jennifer Lopez‘s latest manicure can serve as inspiration for how to dial it darker without going all the way black.
J. Lo’s Kiss of the Spider Woman press push has officially begun, and she showed up to a screening in a look that marries elegance, drama, and a little darkness—exactly what the film calls for. She was stunningly draped in a tan Harith Hashim ensemble, the wavy silhouette of which contrasted with how Andrew Fitzsimons styled her hair perfectly straight. Makeup artist Mary Phillips gave Lopez a subdued smoky eye, but the real beauty drama was reserved for her darkest-possible-burgundy nails, which he achieved by layering.
Nail artist Tom Bachik wanted to give J. Lo a “vampy vibe for a classic Chanel look,” and that look started an already pretty damn dark brownish-red, opaque shade of Aprés Gel Couleur, Never Bordeaux You. He then topped that off with a sheer, black shade of the same formula, Midnight Shadow, to deepen it just a bit more.
