Remember the chunky highlights era, when any time you got highlights, they were basically guaranteed to be at least an inch wide? It started with stars like Kelly Clarkson in the early 2000s and evolved into the stripey scene looks of the Myspace era, incorporating every color of the rainbow interspersed with black or dark burgundy. In hindsight, it was a really fun time for hair experimentation, and Cardi B’s latest color combo brought me right back to that expressive, colorful chapter.
Cardi, who is getting ready for the release of her much-anticipated second album, Am I the Drama?, has been posting all sorts of funny videos trying to get fans to buy the album when it drops on September 19. In the latest video, the rapper shows off a new box set edition of the album—including a bright yellow vinyl, which perfectly matches her hair color. Cardi’s hair is pulled up in a high, loose, full bun to show off the yellow-and-black color palette. A thick, sideswept bang brushes over one eye; it’s mostly yellow, but if you look closely, you’ll see that the tips are black. And when I say yellow, I mean bright crayon yellow, daffodil yellow, lemon yellow—not butter yellow or blonde. “I love the color yellow,” she says.
