If your Royal Ascot bet was that Kate Middleton would wear one of her famous loosely wavy, highly glossy blowouts for her triumphant return to Britain’s premier horse racing event after three years, I’m afraid you wagered wrong. This occasion calls for a polished updo, and for the affair’s second day, she wore a chignon so sizable, so scrupulously sculpted, so… deliciously reminiscent of a cinnamon roll, if I’m being honest. And that’s a compliment to the highest degree.
Although Middleton looks stunning from every angle, it’s the view from the side and back that reveals her updo’s architectural brilliance. Rather than sitting squarely at the nape of her neck, the chignon is jauntily positioned off-center, with a roll starting behind one ear and sweeping gracefully toward the opposite side. The asymmetry gives a classic look some modernity and interest without breaking any royal protocols.

The bun has truly impressive volume, but no visible teasing or fluffiness—just dense, smooth structure. From certain angles, it looks almost woven, built from broad sections of hair and folded over in a way that creates the look of remarkable thickness.
Not even her dramatic Philip Treacy hat can steal its thunder. Because the chignon is positioned low and slightly to the side, the wearable piece of art can rest securely above it without obscuring any of the intricate hairstyling efforts underneath.
